Aesthetics are very important to us, and TriVista helped tremendously by eliminating all the lightswitches that would have cluttered up the walls. The lighting is both convenient and impressive. Our system is heavily based on security, and there is no doubt that TriVista’s automation system means that our home is well protected.

A master touchscreen is located in the front entrance for overall main control, with secondary keypads in two additional rooms. Exterior video surveillance features motion sensing that alerts on the presence of any people when unoccupied. The grounds are self-watered based on a pre-set schedule, which is automatically adjusted based on rainfall. Twelve zones of rich audio are controlled by touchscreens in primary areas, and volume controls in secondary rooms. Lighting is automatically turned off in certain circumstances to save energy. Both lighting and audio are also controlled by a convenient remote.

Customer Comments

We acquired a smart home system somewhat piecemeal, over a period of 2 years. This meant that TriVista had to keep expanding the system and adding new components to it, even after construction was completed. TriVista always made sure that things worked the way we wanted it – they were very accommodating. The system works very well, and we find it simple to use. Whenever we have a problem, TriVista quickly resolves it.

Customer Comments

TriVista recently automated our custom waterfront home. We really enjoy the lighting scenes, and appreciate how the "Welcome Home" and "Good Night" scenes automatically take care of so many things in the home. Not only is the system powerful, but we find it easy to learn and to use. Security and lighting is all automatic when we arrive and depart, which is extremely convenient for us. Our Smart Home Theater was a particular challenge, but TriVista made good use of existing speakers, and they were able to work around my stone fireplace, which presented a challenge for the centre speaker. The movie viewing experience is absolutely awesome, with unbelievable 7.1 surround sound!

TriVista took the time to listen to our specific needs, and they made our home environment work just the way we wanted it to. They took the time to work closely with us and with other contractors, then they translated our needs into simple, single-touch options that make our in-home living even more enjoyable than we expected. We recommend TriVista for any smart home project, but especially for technically challenging projects.

Customer Comments

TriVista worked with us for over a year to automate our custom-built urban Toronto home. We now have a very highly automated smart home. TriVista installed a sophisticated security system with over 30 zones of detection throughout the home and grounds. The security system is integrated with the other home systems, which we control with 6 6-button scene controllers, several LCD in-wall keypads, and 2 dedicated security keypads. I can access it by phone or via computer around the world.

We automated 30 light switches, which we control via several convenient scenes and scenarios. TriVista installed 2 complete home theatres, one based on an LCD TV and another with a projection screen for an amazing theatre experience. We have 13 zones of audio that we can control easily from almost any room, which is really handy given our family's varied taste in music styles.

TriVista integrated our swimming pool system with the home control system in such a way that we can monitor and control important pool conditions from anywhere we wish, even when we're not at home. TriVista's solution has made our home more enjoyable and safer.

Smart Home Solution

A modern urban home built using state of the art construction, featuring classic styling in an established neighbourhood. This is a smart home solution for a busy, growing family with highly active school-age children. Safety is the cornerstone of this system, particularly with the swimming pool, and children constantly on the move. Each family member has their own music zone and selections, and a home theatre to enjoy. The home can be controlled from in-wall touchscreens in various common rooms, or a mobile 10-inch wireless touchpad. Pre-programmed OFF scenes ensure that energy-hungry devices such as the pool and electronics are powered down when not needed, to reduce the energy footprint of this smart home. Radio entertainment, pool, lighting, and more can all be controlled from a single touch of a button. The home can also be controlled and monitored from any remote location via the internet.

Customer Comments

With our three school-age children, we wanted our smart home to focus on safety and convenience. Energy conservation is an important principle for us, and we wanted to set a good example for our children. TriVista upgraded our security system to an advanced system capable of notifying us by phone whenever something happens that we need to know about. We can keep an eye on the kids via the cameras, which gives us more freedom to multi-task, and we feel more confident everything is under control. We use a simple in-wall keypad to turn multiple lights and systems off at night, and we appreciate the fact that "Off means Off" - the lights, the pool, and even the standby electronics are powered off.

Smart Home Solution

This project is all about entertainment and enjoyment. A six-button in-wall controller is used for convenient lighting scenes, and eliminates a great deal of individual light switching. Three zones of HD video distribution ensures that wall-mounted flat-screen TVs are aesthetically pleasing on the walls, with no visible equipment or wiring. Music and HD video programming can be easily selected from any of the TVs in any location, via a simple remote. Over 20 rooms of lighting are automatically and easily controlled, as is the temperature and entertainment, all from a single easy-to use remote or wall switch.

Customer Comments

We wanted to be able to select TV programming from any room without having to instal digital TV boxes and wiring in each of the rooms. Now we have a vastly simplified setup, where we can control and enjoy entertainment easily from a single remote, while the gear behind it all is hidden in another room. The audio sounds great, and everything is so easy to use, despite all the equipment we invested in. TriVista made it all work well and look good on our walls, and we find it enjoyable to use.

This smart condo is located at The Currents, a 43-unit luxury condo building developed in 2007 by Windmill Developments Group. TriVista has equipped the unit with state-of-the-art home automation technology that makes the home a truly “smart condo”.

This automated condominium home is more enjoyable, more energy-efficient, and offers far greater comfort and convenience than an ordinary unit. The home’s various systems can be easily controlled from a simple remote control, in-wall keypad, portable iPod, or remote internet connection. Some of the capabilities include:

  • Music streaming to different rooms.
  • One-touch scenes can turn on lights, fireplace, play music, select video entertainment, and adjust temperature.
  • Automatic homeowner notification via phone of any alert (e.g. furnace failure), emergency (burglary), or critical information (children did not arrive home) when away.
  • Automatically adjusts temperature and lighting to eliminate wasted energy, helping the homeowner contribute to a green living lifestyle.

The Smart Condo is owned by Victor Klassen, one of the first residents of The Currents and a vocal promoter of green living. The building has received one of Canada’s three mixed-use platinum certifications awarded to date under LEED the sustainable building standard that's sweeping the housing industry. The lighting and temperature can be adjusted automatically when entering or leaving, and even when not at home, for maximum energy savings.

The equipment includes a central computerized “brain” (a controller that manages lighting, heating/cooling, security, and entertainment), smart light switches, multi-room audio, home theatre control, and an in-wall control keypad. A single remote is used to enjoy audio or video entertainment, without any of the usual unsightly equipment, wiring, or remotes. The various systems in the home can be controlled from a remote control, in-wall keypad, a wireless Apple iPod Touch®, or remotely via the internet. Motion and door sensors are used to activate lighting and entertainment automatically. Smart Home Solution

A busy Financial Executive has designed a beautiful family dream home in a rural enclave just a brief commute from downtown Toronto. The home was custom-designed for the couple with their four young children, and features an integrated living area for the homeowner’s parents. This home contains a highly integrated automation and entertainment system, developed over a 2-year period via a unique partnership between the tech-savvy homeowner and TriVista Smart Homes of Toronto. TriVista designed and delivered a sophisticated smart security system including video surveillance, tightly integrated with a home automation platform based on Control4. The Homeowner designed the underlying communications infrastructure and selected Audio/Video equipment to suit the family’s expectations, while working closely with TriVista on overall system design. This partnership has yielded a highly automated home with spectacular entertainment capabilities, with more to come in the future.

Easy for the Residents

“With three generations living in this home, everything has to be one-button simple to operate”, says Bill Toms, Project Manager at TriVista. “There is a great deal of complicated technology at work here, but the complexity is all hidden from the occupants. Everything the family members need to do with the various home systems is brought together in the Control4 menu, on four wall-mounted 7-inch touchscreens and one 10-inch wireless portable touchscreen”. Control4`s onscreen Director menu appears on all of the home’s 16 flat-screen TVs for simple, consistent control in any room. Even the swimming pool and garage doors are controlled from the Control4 onscreen menus.

A Control4 HC1000 functions as the master home controller. A separate HC 500 controller manages storage and physical relays, and two HC 300s are used to manage I/R control of the AV equipment.

Video Surveillance of the grounds and entrances are provided by eight AXIS IP cameras, with 24/7 recording, all accessible on any of the 16 TVs or five Control4 touchscreens. 50 lighting zones can be easily controlled by in-wall touchscreens and 6-button keypads in strategic locations throughout the home. A six-zone OnQ intercom and teledoor remote driveway gate control allows the homeowners to readily assess and greet visitors.

High-Quality Entertainment

The family enjoys fingertip access to 1,400 stored movies on any of 16 zones of video. The main family room features a 92-inch drop-down projection screen with full 7.1 surround sound. Four other rooms utilize 5.1 surround sound for a superior TV/movie experience. Twenty four zones of premium-quality POLK speakers means the family can enjoy rich music in nearly every room, including the indoor pool.

Major Infrastructure

The 2-level home is quite spread out over 10,000 feet, and the sheer quantity of video and audio sources and destination points presented a particular challenge for high-definition TV distribution. TriVista installed 60 active Balun pairs on Cat5e cable runs, so HDTV and premium audio is available in nearly every room. The 1,400 movies are stored on 16 terabytes of NAS storage, managed by five NETGEAR EVA9150 media streaming servers. Five cable TV boxes and several home theatre receivers are shared among the 16 video zones by using two Key Digital 8X8 video matrix switchers. All this equipment resides in six racks in a specially built room for electronics infrastructure. According to Toms ”Distribution is the key to this project. The homeowner wanted high definition TV in a lot of different rooms, with many different shared sources. The underlying infrastructure had to be quite strong in order to meet their needs for the foreseeable future.”

A Bright Future

The homeowner is not done yet! A home theatre, shared gaming, and possibly motorized shades are all on the drawing board, to be implemented on the existing Control4 platform in this fully future-proofed home.

Smart Home Solution

Located in the Toronto's Kingsway Village neighbourhood, this home was custom-built by the Mike Holmes organization of Get it Right® fame. Designed by Gregory Reuter Architect, with construction management by Lakeshore Custom Homes, this modern home meets Mike's high standards for quality construction, energy efficiency and low-impact lifestyle features. Using state of the art energy efficient construction, the home is a fully automated smart home by TriVista Smart Homes. The home is occupied by a highly active family with four young children.

Smart security and convenient family entertainment are the hallmarks of this digitally controlled home. TriVista designed and delivered a sophisticated smart security system including video surveillance, tightly integrated with a home automation platform based on Control4. The Homeowner selected the underlying communications infrastructure and selected Audio/Video equipment to suit the family's needs, while working closely with TriVista on overall system design. This partnership has yielded a highly automated home with spectacular entertainment capabilities and exceptional security.

"With such a young and highly active family, everything has to be one-button simple to operate", says Bill Toms, Project Manager at TriVista. "Entertainment is what everyone sees, while safety and security operates invisibly in the background. Everything the family members need to do with the various home systems is brought together in the Control4 menu, on 2 Apple iPads and an in-wall 7-inch touchscreen". Control4`s onscreen Director menu also appears on the home's flat-screen TVs for simple, consistent control in key rooms.

Entertainment

The home offers eight zones of in-ceiling audio entertainment from a variety of selectable sources, including Rhapsody online streamed music, and a dock for the owner's iPods. Movies and music are stored on a central shared network hard drive for distribution to four different rooms throughout the home. Audio and movies can be selected in any of the four zones via a remote control, an Apple iPad, or on a touchscreen mounted on the wall.

Safety and Security

With young children and a swimming pool, safety is paramount. A special high-resolution camera continuously monitors the pool and triggers an alarm should any activity be sensed in the pool when the parents are not expecting anyone to be in the pool. The smart security system self-monitors the home and automatically alerts the homeowners by cellphone if any safety condition is breached (fire, burglary, etc.), or if there is a problem with the home itself (temperature too low, water spill, window left open, etc.). The parents can even monitor and control the children's entertainment. Entry and exit events are monitored and recorded. If a fire were to occur, the home will wake up all residents, automatically shut off the furnace fan to reduce the spread of smoke, turn on all lights, flash outside lights, and call up to eight numbers. Gas and water leaks are monitored, as well as temperature.

Lighting

This smart home features three levels and a number of interesting room and stairwell layouts. Lighting is controlled by over 40 automated dimming smart light switches, which work in concert to light a section of the home at a time as needed. A convenient GOOD NIGHT scene shuts down all lights, switches off the electronics, arms the security, and checks all doors and windows. Similar lighting scenes call for dinner, support homework time, and more. Simple, elegant one-touch in-wall keypad buttons can be used to control lighting and entertainment scenes.

Home Control

As sophisticated as the various systems in this home may be, controlling everything is a snap, with a simple touch on an Apple iPad or an in-wall touchscreen. At the touch of a button, entire rooms of lighting and entertainment can be controlled. The camera image can be brought up on the TV or iPad, and any iPad or touchscreen user can select a movie or music by cover art, then decide in which room to play it.
